Life: Philippines Long Distance Service Scam

August 11th, 2010 Patcoola No comments

So my mother received an interesting phone call today from a telemarketer in the Philippines.

The telemarketer asked if we were happy with our long distance provider and if we would like to which. We knew right away that something was wrong, because the call was coming from the Philippines and it happens to be fact that we only have one long distance provider in the Yukon.

Life: Computer Repair Service

June 25th, 2010 Patcoola No comments

Every real computer technician has a “magic” CD/DVD with all their tools installed on it: Virus removal, Data management, Data recovery, etc.

The downside to this that the technician must do their own programming and support for this “magic” disk.

I’ve been working hard developing my new “magic” disk for the last few weeks and it is almost ready, but before I can make my computer repair service official I will have to do real world testing. So for the first few months (maybe till the end of the year) my services will be free. FREE!

Life: Customized Windows Installations

June 23rd, 2010 Patcoola No comments

I am work on integrating a verity of software titles with the Windows installation disk.

Customized Windows Installations allow for unattended (Automated) Windows installs so you don’t have to sit and fill in the CD key and user names during the install process.

Customized Windows Installations allow a number of software titles and custom settings to be included as a part of the installation, so you don’t have to reinstall your favorite programs over again.

Windows Updates, Service Packs, Java Updates, Hardware Drivers, etc can be included.

Branding allows businesses to include there logo and contact information into the system properties.

Life: Programming my HTPC Part 2

April 30th, 2010 Patcoola No comments

Projects: Hauppauge WinTV Remote
(Extended Remote Project)

After putting sometime into setting up my old computer to finally be the media center PC it should be, I have uncovered the following additions to what I have already stated in Part 1.

  • Digital Television Killed the TV Tuner
  • Digital TV has copy protection
  • HTPC TV Tuners can only record TV in Standard Definition
  • HTPC TV Tuners can mainly display only free over the Air High Definition
  • Setting up, and Programing a PC to work with a TV and Remote is hard
  • Lack of compatible TV Outputs

Current Issues:

  • MPEG2 displays with a scan line

This maybe because it is interlaced and not progressive, this scan line that moves across the screen doesn’t happen with progressive video. Currently it’s a small problem and maybe fixable by changing the de-interlacing options on my ATI video card.

Customized WinTV Remote Settings

Recently I’ve gave my old media center PC (HTPC) a new home beside the TV. Since I no longer use it as my primary computer, it is only fitting for it to take it’s rightful place beside the TV for now on.

HTPC’s where mostly popular as a new subject in computer marketing in the early 2000s’, but was a failure due to it’s unfriendly and difficulties to use.

(It’s a computer you can watch TV with and play your media with your entertainment system.) Great idea right? Well yes, but the fact it is a computer and not a high tech VCR means that nothing is simple.
