Northwestel Increases DSL Overage Fees

Northwestel DSL Internet users to pay insanely larger overage fees beginning July 1, 2010.

Northwestel has made some changes to there Internet usage measurements, the change now measures Internet usage in Gigiabytes instead of Megabytes. Potentially this can mean that the value of Megabytes is now meaningless since Northwestel is now providing “massive” amounts of data usage to there customers. Ideally we wish this was true, but Northwestel has never made any changes to there Internet usage caps since the early 2000’s when Northwestel stopped providing unlimited usage.

According to Northwestel’s overage rates, subscribers will now be paying larger overage charges from Northwestel’s DSL services.

Northwestel’s new overage rates:

1 cent per 0.0001 GB; this is equal to 1 cent per 100 Kilobytes.
About 10 cents a Megabyte and 100 dollars per Gigabyte.

DSL subscribers can now expect to receive insanely large Internet bills in the near future.

    Hi Patcoola,

Thank you for pointing out an error on our website.

In fact, our web overage charges have not increased. For NWT, Northern BC and Yukon customers, we charge $10 per additional GB. We bill overage in one cent increments. Our website should have stated that we charge one cent per one ten thousandth of a GB, not one cent per one thousandth of a GB.

Sorry for the confusion, we have fixed the error and have listed the correct overage charge on our website.

We have not raised the charge of additional usage since introducing our Internet packages almost 10 years ago. If we were to increase our rates, we would notify our customers directly of the change, and not simply change the information on our website.

Again, thanks for bringing this error to our attention.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us directly in future if you have questions about our rates or services.
