Small Business Tips: The Cost of Ink

Did you know that investing in a small laser/multifunction laser printer can save you hundreds per year on ink.

Today ink can cost more than the printer it’s self; in fact you could buy a printer on sale that includes ink for the same cost.

But if you’re a small business this concept sounds costly and inefficient.

What about Laser?

Color laser printers are very expensive, but black and white so happens to be very inexpensive.

I bought a Samsung multifunction laser printer on sale for $200 which includes a free toner cartridge with a print capacity of 2500 pages.

A standard black toner cartridge has a print capacity of 5000 pages.

Lets do the math.

If a black ink cartridge has a capacity of 250 pages, and costs about $16 dollars CAD, and a black toner cartridge has a capacity of 5000 pages and costs about $100 CAD, how much would ink cost?

A single black toner cartridge is equal to 20 black ink cartridges.

20 black ink cartridges will cost about $320 CAD, $220 dollars more than the toner.

The benefits of Laser.

Small business machines are just that business machines, most ink jet printers are not business machines and lack the business features.

Not only laser is sharper and faster than ink jet printers, business machines are network enabled allowing any computer to print in the house/office, for multifunction printers I can scan to any computer as well. Business multifunction printers can have many fax/email functions, plus printer management features like emailed alerts if paper/toner is low and if the paper tray is left open.

So stop wasting your money on black ink and try toner.
